With tremendous support and cooperation from our school counselors and principals, we plan to hold sophomore tours and CareerTEC Information Nights for parents and students from December through February.

Schools will bring their sophomores – and possibly some juniors – for most of a Friday on    Dec. 5 (Freeport only) and Jan. 16 to tour our classrooms. We purposely plan for the tours to take place shortly before registration is done at each school. Each school is responsible for chaperones. CareerTEC can reimburse schools for transportation and the cost of substitute teachers. All schools have confirmed that they can attend on their assigned dates.

  • Friday, Dec. 5: Freeport sophomores to tour CareerTEC classrooms at St. John UCC and Highland Community College (except Ag Science and maybe Criminal Justice)
  • Friday, Jan. 16: Dakota, Durand, Orangeville, Pearl City, and Pecatonica sophomores to tour CareerTEC classrooms at St. John UCC, Highland Community College and, if the tour is after 11 a.m., Freeport High School

This year, Freeport principals and counselors tried a new approach to encourage students to sign up for the CareerTEC tour. During their Nov. 7 morning advisory period, current FHS students attending CareerTEC delivered a short presentation to FHS sophomores with a 1.8 GPA or above. Also, Freeport principal Sarah Hasken edited my CareerTEC Information Night presentation to share information with the students. This increased effort to inform students about CareerTEC was done, in part, to improve attendance for our sophomore tours and address dwindling enrollment from FHS students in recent years (see below). A big thanks to Mrs. Hasken, assistant principal Romie Brubaker, counselor Sara Shockey and all those who are went the extra mile to inform FHS students.
